Joseph E. Blaker, 81Sun City West resident Joseph Edgar Blaker, Jr., died Aug. 5, 2007, at home after a lengthy battle with diabetes and a series of strokes.Mr. Blaker was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Thurmond, W.V., to Belle and Joseph Blaker, Sr. After high school graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee, stationed on Saipan during World War II.He was the best friend and soul mate of his wife, Lorraine, for 56 years. He retired from NCR in Dayton, Ohio, as education manager in 1987. He and his wife then relocated to Sun City West, enjoying many hours of golfing and bowling. He perfected his hobby of woodworking, crafting many exceptional pieces that will be treasured by many for years to come. He was warm and friendly, always ready with an amusing story, making friends wherever he went.He was also active in the community. He served on the recreation center board, the Sun City bowling committee and the wood shop quality control committee. He also held several positions on the Hillcrfest Men's Golf Club. For many years he recruited men to serve as monitors at the FBR Open in Scottsdale.Mr. Blaker is survived by his wife; a daughter, Beverly Van Engelen; a brother, James (Bonnie) Blaker; four sisters, Jane (Mike) Heller, Esther (David) Van Hoose, Jeanne (Marvin) Luckett and Sarah Crooks; two grandchildren, Alison and Nate Van Engelen; and many nieces, nephews and friends.Services to honor Mr. Blaker's life were at Church of Christ in Christian Union in Ohio with Dr. David Van Hoose, Dr. Brad Brandt and Rev. Marvin Luckett officiating. A military service followed.Memorial congtributions can be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.
