The Herberger Theater in downtown Phoenix will open 2024 with the Arizona premiere of the musical “Islander.”

Winner of Best New Musical at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, “Islander” is a musical showcase of storytelling, intimately staged with a contemporary Scottish folk-inspired score as dramatic as the Scottish coastline.

Opening night is Thursday, Jan. 11 at Herberger, 222 E. Monroe St., in Phoenix, and the production runs through Sunday, Jan. 28.

“There is a girl,” a Herberger press release says of the storyline. “She stares out to sea and dreams of a new life beyond her lonely island. Myth and reality collide when the tide washes a mysterious stranger onto her beach. ‘Islander’’s music and story transports you on a magical journey combining a contemporary Scottish folk/pop-inspired score and epic storytelling.

“Islander” is conceived and directed by Amy Draper, with associate direction by Eve Nicol. The book is written by Stewart Melton, and music and lyrics are by Finn Anderson.

Two performers create a world of characters while weaving, building, and layering their voices through the incorporation of live looping technology, Herberger explains of the innovative approach of staging the production.
