The Hornets, who play Friday night at Washington, dealt star point LaMelo Ball to Minnesota in the offseason, and Reid came to Charlotte in the deal.
Reid had spent all seven of his NBA seasons with the Timberwolves and was the 2023-24 Sixth Man of the Year.
Reid started against Detroit and scored seven points on 2-of-6 shooting in 13 minutes.
Cade Cunningham scored 30 points for the Pistons, who won 97-89.
