Henderson: Tires can create big problems at lake

Posted

I am a homeowner in Sun City and I just drove by the Viewpoint Lake that is being repaired.

I noticed it is beginning to fill with water and still has piles of debris throughout the lake. I can see the debris is mostly dirt, concrete and rock, but there seems to be dozens of old tires included in this debris. Every time you put a new set of tires on your car you pay a disposal fee to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

These homeowners have paid thousands of dollars to have this lake properly repaired and leaving all these old tires in the lake will create a toxic mess in the future. When tires degrade, they release heavy metals, volatile organic compounds and other chemicals into the environment. In this case, the immediate environment would be water.

Releasing these materials into lake water would be toxic to the fish in the lake, any wildlife visiting the lake, homeowners living on the lake and any recreational activity on the lake would be prohibited.

This all seems counterproductive as to why the homeowners wanted to have the lake repaired.
