Goodyear officers injured during burglary chase, 1 suspect arrested

A Goodyear police officer was bitten by one of the department’s canines while responding to a burglary call Monday.
Around 3 p.m., the Goodyear Police Department received a call from a person in the area of Pebble Creek Parkway and McDowell Road regarding at least two home burglaries.
Officers were able to arrest 21-year-old Robert Gastelum on numerous charges, but not before a couple of injuries to him and two officers.

Public Information Officer Lisa Kutis said one officer was hit by a gate with a tight-loaded spring while chasing a suspect. That officer sustained head and arm injuries but has since been treated and released from the hospital.
The second officer was bitten by a police K9, sustaining a serious leg injury, Ms. Kutis said. He underwent surgery and is recovering as of Tuesday.
Ms. Kutis said Mr. Gastelum was injured but not bitten. He too went to the hospital and was released after treatment.
He is now in the Fourth Avenue Jail for aggravated assault, burglary, trespassing and resisting arrest.
The injured officers are expected to recover.

Goodyear police said cash and jewelry were the primarily stolen items from the homes.
Officers are still searching for three or four more suspects. One of them is described as a Hispanic woman in her early 30s. She may be driving a white GMC or Dodge-style vehicle extended cab truck with a black cover over the bed.
The other subjects are described as Hispanic males, late teens to early 20s.
