Arizona Opera opens its 2023-24 season with its third world premiere, this time adapting Mary Shelley’s classic novel for “Frankenstein.”
With music and libretto by Gregg Kallor, “Frankenstein” comes to life after a four-year creative journey. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 15.
The adaptation will be staged at Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe St., Phoenix.
The classic tale showcases how The Creature is brought to life only to be forsaken by its creator, Victor Frankenstein. Embracing Shelley’s original text, “Frankenstein” gives poignant voice to The Creature’s struggle and lays bare the horror of alienation and “otherness” with exquisite nuance, a press release explains.
“Frankenstein” was workshopped at Arizona Opera in Phoenix in December 2022. It follows Arizona Opera’s first two world premieres, “Riders of the Purple Sage” and “The Copper Queen,” the latter of which was released in fall 2021 as a feature-length film.
The production is part of Arizona Opera’s McDougall RED Series funded in part by a gift from Linda and Stuart Nelson, and made possible by Ron and Kay McDougall, and Michael and Beth Kasser.
