Father, son found dead inside vehicle in southwest Valley canal

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating after a vehicle carrying two dead people was found in a canal in the southwest Valley.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office responded to an incident Jan. 3 in Arlington, west of State Route 85.

MCSO officials said agriculture workers found a truck in the canal near Old U.S. Highway 80 and Arlington Road at about 8 a.m. and contacted authorities.

Investigators believe while the vehicle was traveling on Old U.S. Highway 80, the driver lost control and flipped into the irrigation canal operated by the Roosevelt Water District.

It is not known how long the vehicle was in the water before being discovered.

MCSO said the truck was upside down and could not be easily seen from the road, so it would have been very difficult to spot at night.

MCSO said two individuals located inside the vehicle were dead. Officials identified them as 38-year-old Patrick Gonzales and his 14-year-old son.

The cause of death is not known.

MCSO is ruling the deaths accidental while the investigation is ongoing.
