The family of a former Phoenix Fire Department captain laid her to rest Tuesday after she died from injuries sustained in a 2009 traffic accident.

Services for Capt. Crystal Rezzonico, 56, were held Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Christ Church of the Valley in Peoria.

Capt. Rezzonico died on Feb. 18 as a result of injuries she sustained from an on-duty traffic accident on Aug. 10, 2009.

In a Facebook post, the department said Capt. Rezzonico was responding to a reported structure fire when an inattentive driver traveling at a high rate of speed struck the Fire Engine she was traveling in. The impact of the collision resulted in Capt. Rezzonico being ejected from the truck and onto the street. A total of eight vehicles were involved in the collision and 14 people were injured.

She sustained a traumatic brain injury, two broken legs and two broken shoulders as a result of the accident. She spent two weeks in a coma, underwent multiple surgeries - including five brain surgeries - and endured eight weeks of neurological rehab to be able to walk and talk again.

The funeral service Tuesday ran from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Officials restricted and blocked roads in the area of 67th Avenue and Happy Valley Road, including from Happy Valley Road south to Loop 101 along 67th Avenue.
