Downtown exhibit depicts ‘Life Patterns’ through art

Display opens Feb. 25 on Roosevelt Row

A new art exhibit in downtown Phoenix is telling a story through “Life Patterns.”

That’s the name of the exhibit on display inside the Olney Gallery at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 100 W. Roosevelt St. The works will show from Friday, Feb. 25 through Wednesday, March 23.

Since 2000, the Olney Gallery has served as a professional art space serving the needs of artists and art lovers in Phoenix as a part of Trinity Cathedral’s outreach into the community. It’s an integral part of the monthly First Fridays event on Roosevelt Row, and hosts a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on those nights.

Artists featured in “Life Patterns” include:

  • Tristyn Bustamonte is interested in imagining the future of AI systems and the natural world as influenced by humans. Her sculptures involve communicating through subject matter involving references to specific animals and technologies. Bustamonte has a Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University and teaches at Northern Arizona University.
  • Barbara Kemp Cowlin paints to address the dichotomy between reality and fantasy. She observes the solid structures of the built environment. She waits for the moment when the timing is right, and the light hits them, making them luminous. She has a Master in Community College Education-Art/Printmaking from Northern Arizona University.
  • Freddie Lieberman views the world on many levels. Her artwork reflects the evolution of her painting style using many overlapping glazes, paints, and embellishments to create intriguing color combinations and shapes. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from the University of Illinois/Champaign Urbana.
  • Darlene Ritter loves painting expressively with acrylics in a non-objective manner using the elements and principles of design. She uses movement, color, and texture in her paintings and is influenced by geometry. She has a Master of Art Education from California State University and spent 40 years as a teacher.

Artists are welcome to request an opportunity to share their art in the Olney Gallery. Submissions are reviewed annually by the Visual Arts Ministry, which is charged with creating a calendar of exhibits. The Visual Arts Ministry operates under the guidance of Manny Burruel, the gallery’s director.

Email olneygallery@gmail.com for submission guidelines.
