Detectives investigate confrontation leading to fatal I-10 shooting

A rush-hour shooting led to a crash and death this week along Interstate 10 in Phoenix, and an investigation is underway.

The shooting occurred just after 8 a.m. Jan. 15 when officers responded to the incident that affected westbound traffic. Officers contacted a man detained by Arizona troopers in the parking lot of a restaurant near 1400 North 75th Avenue. He had called 911, acknowledging involvement in the shooting and led troopers to his location, police said.

The man was turned over to Phoenix police homicide detectives who interviewed him.

The shooting victim, who crashed into a freeway median barrier, has been identified at Erian Sandoval, 26. He died at the scene.

The victim and the shooter were driving west on I-10 when they got into a confrontation, leading to a weapon being fired and the crash, according to a Phoenix Police Department release. The shooter was interviewed and released pending additional investigation.

Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be submitted to and reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, police said.
