Ketel Marte was selected by fans to start at second base for the National League in the MLB All-Star Game, joining Paul Goldschmidt as the second Diamondback ever selected to start multiple All-Star Games.
The starting lineups were announced Wednesday night. This year’s game is Tuesday, July 16 in Arlington Texas.
Randy Johnson also started multiple All-Star Games as a pitcher (2000 and 2001) but that position is selected by the All-Star team’s manager rather than a fan vote.
Marte’s previous selection as an All-Star starter, also at second base, was in 2019. He went 1 for 2 in that game, hitting a double in his first plate appearance.
Marte’s 4.4 WAR is second only to Dodger Shohei Ohtani in the National League and seventh in the majors, the Diamondbacks stated in a news release. He also leads all second basemen with a .517 slugging percentage, .871 OPS, 38 extra-base hits, 50 RBI, 166 total bases and 11 defensive runs saved, is tied for first with 17 homers, second with 19 doubles, tied for second with a 1.4 dWAR and third with 92 hits.
The 30-year-old from the Dominican Republic is the sixth Diamondback position player voted in as a starter, joining Matt Williams (1999, 3B), Jay Bell (1999, 2B), Luis Gonzalez (2001, OF), Paul Goldschmidt (2014 and 2015, 1B) and Corbin Carroll (2023, OF). Three D-back pitchers have also been selected to start by the All-Star team’s manager: Johnson (2000, 2001), Curt Schilling (2002) and Zac Gallen (2023). In 2018, Goldschmidt, though he did not win the fan vote for first base, was selected by the manager to start at designated hitter.
