City of Phoenix garbage truck hits, kills woman in north Valley

Posted

A 21-year-old woman walking in a crosswalk near 19th Avenue and Union Hills Drive was hit by a garbage truck Thursday afternoon and died at the scene of the collision, Phoenix police said.

Officers arrived at the north Valley crash scene about 3:30 p.m. Feb. 15 and found Orianna Nicole Diosdado with serious injuries. She did not survive and was pronounced dead.  The vehicle involved in the collision was a City of Phoenix sanitation truck, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

Detectives took over the investigation and said preliminary information suggests the garbage truck was northbound on 19th Avenue and made a right-hand turn at Union Hills Drive.

While turning, the garbage truck struck Diosdado who was walking northbound in a marked crosswalk at the intersection, they said in the release.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in this collision, and additional details about the collision remain part of the ongoing investigation. An accident reconstruction process is underway, police said.
