The Apache Junction Public Library will temporarily close, effective March 19, as the city follows federal, state and local recommendations to practice social distancing.

Health officials have issued guidelines to limit gatherings and the city supports such moves to slow the spread of COVID-19, the new strain of coronavirus, according to a release.

Additionally, the Apache Junction Multi-Generational Center will close indefinitely on Thursday, March 20 as part of the city’s response to the virus outbreak. All special events and fitness programs have been suspended.

The library reminds patrons that they can download eBooks, audiobooks, digital magazines, music and streaming videos 24/7 from the comfort of their homes at ajpl.org/digital-collections. Other material can also be found at the Greater Phoenix Digital Library, phoenix.overdrive.com. For library information, call 480-474-8555 or go to ajpl.org.

Multi-Generational Center staff will be available by phone during regular city business hours 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and also 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Fridays.

Other city operations, including those at the City Clerk’s Office and the city Development Services department, remain open.

The city on Tuesday temporarily halted senior programs, including congregate meals, which are held at the Multi-Generational Center. The city continues to supply meals to seniors on a “drive-through” basis and by delivery. All recreation and fitness programs at the Multi-Generational Center have been suspended through the end of the month. For more information on the Senior and Recreation programs, call 480-983-2181.

Also, the Apache Junction Water District encouraged all customers to use the online method to pay their water bill, sending a payment by U.S. mail or using the dropboxes at 300 E. Superstition Blvd. and 575 E. Baseline Ave. The water district also put in place a temporary moratorium on water-service disconnections during the pandemic.

The city continues to reassess all its operations in consultation with Pinal County Health Department and state health officials. Apache Junction has had several measures in place as recommended by the county and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Pinal County has seen cases of COVID-19. The CDC says the rate of infection of this new virus is higher among older populations and those with underlying health issues, including heart and lung diseases and diabetes.

As always, the release states, health officials remind to take everyday preventive actions to stay healthy:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
