Phoenix Fire makes online testing, virtual interviews available to bring in more applicants

The Phoenix Fire Department is adding more fire stations to serve the growing city, but the number of recruits has dropped drastically during the past decade. Resulting staffing shortages have caused the department to fall short of its emergency call response time goals.

To help fill the staffing gap, Phoenix Fire is making the department’s application process more accessible: putting the initial written test available online, allowing first interviews for those who pass the test to be done virtually and hosting recruit testing twice a year.

Additionally, the department plans to increase recruitment efforts through things such as social media and hiring posters on fire trucks.
