Chandler looks to evacuate businesses near battery facility on Friday

Businesses near a Salt River Project substation that caught fire last week will be asked to evacuate Friday afternoon as a precaution as firefighters help SRP with a safety procedure.

Last week, a fire broke out involving lithium ion batteries at the facility southeast of Interstate 10 and Loop 202. No injuries were reported.

The Chandler Fire Department is now working with SRP to take measures on Friday to ventilate the building and cease ongoing use of its fire suppression system. As a precaution, businesses within roughly a quarter-mile area are being notified of the recommendation to evacuate by 12:30 p.m. Friday for the duration of this operation.

Starting at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, 56th Street will also be closed between Frye and Allison roads.
