Book documents 80-year history of Mesa Easter Pageant

Local authors Jill Adair and Cecily Condie — both who have had personal involvement in the production — have written a book documenting the 80-year history of the Easter pageant at the Mesa Arizona Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Started in 1938 as a choral sunrise service, the Easter celebration has grown over eight decades to be recognized as the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world. The authors have endeavored to capture the spirit of the Mesa Easter Pageant and the way it has touched countless hearts and lives in the retelling of the life, ministry and resurrection of Jesus Christ or what’s been often called the “greatest story ever told,” according to a release.

“The way in which this production started, and then grew tremendously over the years, is an amazing example of testimony-driven dedication by countless volunteers,” Adair said in the release. “The number of people involved at every level, the effort, and the sheer volume of volunteer hours are incalculable. And their motivation has not been by assignment but because of their love for their Savior and a desire to share His message with their friends and neighbors.”

The production itself is known for its dramatic scenes, authentic-looking costumes, colorful pageantry and its moving music and dance, not to mention a massive cast of nearly 500 people as well as donkeys, sheep and other animals. The pageant has been a well-loved Easter tradition for many families in the East Valley, from neighboring states and even from other countries — drawing crowds of nearly 100,000 annually from all denominations and walks of life.

“The Mesa Easter Pageant – 80 Years of Sharing the Story of Jesus the Christ” is a 280-page hardcover book with full-color pages. More than 50 interviews with main pageant contributors, combined with countless hours of research and contributions from many others, have resulted in a book full of interesting history, inspiring stories and incredible photos, the release states.

Condie said,” It was a distinct privilege to learn more about the story behind the story of the Mesa Easter Pageant and to see not only the many thousands of man hours and resources that have gone into this Easter celebration over the years, but, also to witness how those efforts have touched lives and hearts and have helped so many to know more about Jesus Christ and to feel His peace and love.”

The free community event, which has been on a three-year hiatus due to construction of the grounds and renovation of the Mesa Arizona Temple in downtown Mesa, returns this April, with shows starting at 8 p.m. April 6-9, 12-16. With that return, there has been an added interest in the book and in the behind-the-scenes stories of the sacrifices, time and talent that have been its legacy.

The book will be a cherished keepsake for any who have participated in the pageant or have watched it from the audience, or for anyone interested in learning more about the reasons it has endured for so long, the release states.
