The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement is awarding nearly $900,000 to 27 organizations across the state.

The grants address the Foundation’s key focus areas – mental health, substance use disorder, chronic health conditions, and health equity. The funding will support these organizations in their work to improve individual and community health across the state.

Among those funded include Differently Abled Mothers Empowerment Society, which services Pima, Coconino, and Maricopa counties. Funding will help aid their mental health support for caregivers program, which provides comprehensive skill building and resources for parents raising children with disabilities to reduce toxic stress, depression, anxiety, and PTSD-like symptoms.

“The grant given to DAMES Charities Inc (DBA Care 4 the Caregivers) will enable us to offer essential mental and physical health support to parents raising children with disabilities,” Michele Thorne, Care 4 the Caregivers executive director, shared in a press release. “It is well-documented that caregivers often experience symptoms akin to post-traumatic stress disorder, yet their challenges frequently go unseen and unsupported.”

Among the organizations receiving grants are these that serve Maricopa County:
