Arizona Treasurer honors Peoria student as part of photo contest

A Peoria student is among the winners of the AZ529 My Picture-Perfect Career photo contest.

Liberty High School student Logan Jacobsen was honored along with nine other students from around the state at a ceremony July 27 at the State Capitol.

He was honored for his photo of a firefighter scaling down a building. Logan wants to be a firefighter after he graduates from high school.

Ten kindergarten through 12th grade students from district, charter, private, and home schools, representing six Arizona counties, were honored with $529 education savings accounts.

The program honored young Arizona scholars with big dreams at the Arizona state capitol.

AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan and the Arizona State Treasurer’s Office invited kindergarten through 12th grade students across the state to take a creative photo of their future dream job for the inaugural My Picture-Perfect Career photo contest.

The winners received $529 toward an AZ529 Education Savings Plan. The amount of $529 was selected to pay homage to Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code, which created the AZ529 plan.

AZ529, Arizona's Education Savings Plan, is a state-sponsored education savings plan where earnings grow tax-free. Money invested in an AZ529 plan can be used for college, community college, vocational training, trade school and private K-12 education.

For those who invest in an AZ529 Plan, the state of Arizona offers a state tax deduction up to $2,000 per beneficiary for individual tax filers and up to $4,000 per beneficiary for married tax filers who file a joint return. Qualified educational expenses include tuition and fees, books, computers and room and board. Additionally, friends and family members may add to a child’s AZ529 account at any time through gifting and earn the same tax benefits for themselves.
