The Buckeye Police Department was recently awarded more than $190,000 in traffic safety grants from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
The funding includes two grants that will increase DUI enforcement and provide training to help families protect child passengers, according to a release.
More than $30,000 has been allotted to help traffic investigations covering overtime, training and supply costs.
“This grant will also pay for a piece of equipment to ensure precise and efficient accident reconstruction for crash investigations,” the release stated.
The second grant provides more than $8,000 to promote pedestrian and bike safety, covering helmets, a police-ready bike, cones and traffic signs for the BPD Bike Patrol, “which aims to increase safety education and awareness, improve community relations, and enhance law enforcement coverage at events,” officials stated in the release.
Two grants totaling $100,000 will support DUI enforcement, covering overtime for officers working task force operations, conducting saturation patrols and participating in additional assignments to keep roads safe during holidays and events.
“The funds ensure appropriate officer staffing to combat traffic violations, including distracted driving, impaired driving and speeding, which can increase risk of crashes,” the release stated.
A fifth grant awards more than $14,000 to train and certify officers on car seat installation.
The final grant provides more than $36,000 to cover the purchase of handheld speed radar equipment for patrol officers.
