The Apache Junction Unified School District has been awarded 14 native trees through the Boyce Thompson Arboretum’s 100 Tree Spree initiative.

It marks a milestone in AJUSD’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and beautification of its school campuses, according to a release.

The arboretum’s initiative, launched as part of its centennial celebration, has been a collaborative effort that brings together public institutions, schools and nonprofits to plant 100 native trees throughout the Valley and its neighboring communities from October through December. The initiative aims to enhance the environment, combat the challenges posed by the ongoing climate crisis and promote biodiversity through the planting of native trees.

The trees bestowed upon AJUSD include a variety of native species such as Blue Palo Verde, Foothill Palo Verde and Catclaw Acacia. These trees will not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the school campuses but will also play a vital role in fostering a healthier and more sustainable environment, the release states.

“We are truly excited and grateful to be a part of this exceptional initiative. Trees are not just beautiful additions to our school grounds; they provide essential benefits to our environment and the community as a whole. They offer shade to our students, clean the air we breathe, and promote biodiversity in our local ecosystem,” Dr. Robert Pappalardo, AJUSD superintendent, said.

The inclusion of the trees in AJUSD’s school campuses aligns with the district’s ongoing commitment to fostering environmental awareness and sustainability among its students. The trees will serve as valuable tools for education, allowing students to learn about the vital role trees play in mitigating the effects of climate change and preserving the beauty of Arizona’s natural landscape, the release states.

The AJUSD community is excited about this opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment and looks forward to nurturing and preserving these trees for generations to come.
