Apache Junction school district shares progress on intersession-break classes

As part of its ongoing efforts to address academic challenges discovered during state testing, Apache Junction Unified School District introduced intersession-break classes during the fall break period — an initiative designed to enhance student skills and boost overall academic performance.

AJUSD officials report that it is showing promising results, thanks to the dedication of students, educators and community support, according to a release.

Apache Junction High School Principal Lisa Ginn has been at the forefront of the efforts at AJHS. She has been personally greeting students at the school’s entrance, engaging them in conversation about the impact of the intersession classes. The resounding feedback from students has been positive, with many expressing that these classes have improved their understanding of various subjects.

“We’re very excited about their enthusiasm and commitment to learning,” Ginn said in the release.

Ginn emphasizes the effectiveness of the intersession break classes in allowing educators to work closely with students in smaller, focused groups.

The approach enables personalized instruction tailored to address specific skill gaps and challenges. It also encourages innovative teaching methods, making learning more engaging and effective, the release states.

“Our community’s support, notably from the transportation department, has been invaluable. They have ensured that our students can attend these intersession classes regularly and without disruption. At Peralta Elementary, we have successfully run two classes spanning grades three to five, demonstrating our commitment to addressing skill gaps across multiple grade levels,” Peralta Elementary Principal Kenneth Deloria said in the release.

“We are equally excited about the progress made at Desert Vista Elementary School,” Principal Heather Preston said.

Fifth graders who participated in the fall intersession have shown significant improvements in their understanding of first-quarter math standards, she said.

“These students now approach complex math concepts with newfound confidence,” Preston said.

“Beyond mathematics, the intersession break classes have fostered a love for writing among our students,” said Cheryl Wild, a teacher at Desert Vista, who also highlights the value of the students daily writing activities.

Students completed a chapter book in just four days, she said

“This accomplishment demonstrates what our students are truly capable of,” Wild said.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Pappalardo reports that the intersession break classes are playing a crucial role in the district’s academic improvement efforts.

He expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We take much pride in the devotion and commitment exhibited by both our students and educators in wholeheartedly embracing this program. Together, with the support of our community, we are on the right path to achieving better educational outcomes and preparing our students for future academic success.”

The district extends heartfelt thanks to the entire AJUSD community — including families, educators and students — for their help in making the program a success, the release states.
