Agua Fria crossing project in design phase

What is now a dead end at Williams Road and 117th Avenue will eventually extend across the Agua Fria River to connect with Deer Valley Road. The project, which is in the planning phase, is scheduled to break ground in fall 2019 and will take a year to complete, according to MCDOT officials.

A project to add an Agua Fria River crossing north of Sun City West is in the preliminary phase, according to a Maricopa County Department of Transportation spokesperson.

Progress continues on MCDOT’s plan to connect the east end of Williams Drive at 117th Avenue to the west end of Deer Valley Road at 109th Avenue. The project, which will provide a much-needed additional route east from Sun City West into Peoria, could alleviate some of the congestion along Bell Road.

Officially titled, “Deer Valley Road: El Mirage Road to 109th Avenue,” the plan entails paving two miles of five-lane roadway and may include two bridges, one crossing the Agua Fria River and another to span the Agua Fria Truck Road Reliever.

Nicole Moon, MCDOT communications branch manager, said the long awaited project is moving forward as expected.

“The Deer Valley Road project is currently in the right-of-way acquisition process, which will be followed by necessary environmental investigations,” Ms. Moon stated by email. “Once those efforts are completed, we will advertise the project for construction.”

The project is slated to start in fall 2019 and should take a year to complete. MCDOT will host a public meeting next month to discuss the project and and the potential of adding roundabouts to the design. If adopted, the roundabouts would create a crossing similar to the interchange at Happy Valley Road and Interstate 17.

The agency has yet to announce a specific date for the public meeting, Ms. Moon said.
