Just over 61,000 Arizonans have so far applied for a Voluntary Travel ID card that will allow them to board a commercial airplane or enter a federal facility such as a military base, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Arizona’s standard driver licenses and ID cards that now allow residents to get through security checkpoints at U.S. airports like Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and other restricted, federally controlled facilities will no longer be accepted Oct. 1, 2020.

“We are encouraging as many people as desire this credential to make an office appointment at an MVD office or authorized third-party office to get one,” said Douglas Nick, ADOT spokesman.
