4th annual 5K for Women’s Health raises nearly $50,000

Community comes together to support diabetes prevention education

Posted

It was a picture-perfect day for Sun Health Foundation’s 5K for Women’s Health, Sept. 24 at Surprise Stadium.

The walk/run raised nearly $50,000, with net proceeds benefiting diabetes prevention education through Sun Health Wellness.

A total of 424 runners, walkers and riders ages 2 to 93 participated in person or virtually, resulting in another record year for attendance and demonstrating the community’s growing support for vital wellness resources that empower longer, healthier lives.

The event kicked off with a welcome by Michael Barnes, vice chair of Sun Health Foundation’s Board of Trustees and senior vice president and senior trust advisor, Northern Trust.

“Thank you to participants, donors, sponsors, community partners and spectators,” Barnes said. “Your support for diabetes prevention education makes a tremendous impact and hits close to home for so many that know someone who is at risk or affected.”

“Diabetes is a serious health condition that can be prevented,” Barnes added before relaying some startling statistics. “Did you know that nearly one in every nine adult women is living with diabetes and that it raises women’s risk of heart disease four times? Prevention education is key. Together, we can help reduce the risk for the women in our lives through education. Sun Health champions and conducts diabetes management and prevention education in the West Valley every day.”

Many racers shared what they loved most about participating, and supporting a good cause was among their reasons.

Others included “people having fun,” “being with friends,” “community coming together,” “the organization” and “the exercise.”

Having fun while supporting a great cause was the order of the day. There were many creative team names, and athletic attire adorned with sequins, headbands, skirts, tutus and sashes. One avid runner attended as Spiderman and does so every year.

The 5K is a signature celebration of health and wellness in the West Valley and the next event is Sept. 22, 2024.
