Petitions were due April 4 for the City Council Aug. 2 primary and all eyes are on District 1, where incumbent Roland Winters will try to hold on to the seat against three challengers.
Raymond Grim, who lost to Winters in the 2018 election, is running again in the northern Surprise district. So are newcomers Lewis Guyn and Nick Haney.

In District 5, which includes the City Center, incumbent Jack Hastings is vying for his first four-year term against Kawika Henderson, who ran in the 2020 special election as an official write-in candidate.
City Councilman Chris Judd is running unopposed in District 6, which is in the southeast portion of the city.
If no candidate wins at least 50% of the vote in the District 1 primary, the top two votegetters will go to the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
The deadline to register to vote in the primary is July 5. Ballots will be mailed starting July 6.
The last day to request a ballot in the mail is July 22, and the last day to mail back the ballot is July 26.
