Glendale has opened three heat relief centers, which are expected to serve up to 90 people per day between now through September, the city reported Thursday.

The goal for these centers is to provide a safe place for the unsheltered population and their pets to rest and receive essential nutrition and hydration and to reduce the amount of heat-related deaths in the unsheltered population.

“This program is an example of a powerful partnership between Maricopa County, the city of Glendale, the Arizona Faith Network and Phoenix Rescue Mission,” Glendale’s Community Services Director Jean Moreno said in a statement. “Each partner contributes its resources and expertise to maximize impactful services that support vulnerable members of our community in ways we could not do alone.”

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved $771,000 in funding earlier this year for  Glendale to use toward heat relief for people experiencing homelessness. The money established the three new heat relief respite centers, fund more outreach programs, and allow for transportation to the heat relief centers.

The Glendale centers are at Larkspur Church at 10614 N. 43rd Ave.; at the Glendale Mission & Ministry Center at 6242 N. 59th Ave.; and at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 7205 N. 51st Ave.

The Glendale Mission & Ministry Center is open noon-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. St. John’s Lutheran Church operates from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Larkspur Church is open noon through 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. On Wednesday it is open noon-6 p.m,. and Friday and Saturday from noon until 9 p.m.
