Terminal project
$14M coming to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport from infrastructure law
Posted
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport will receive $14.4 million toward its terminal modernization project under a bipartisan infrastructure law.
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is operated by the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority. PMGAA consists of representation from Apache Junction, Mesa, Queen Creek, Gilbert, Gila River Indian Community and Phoenix.
The funds will be used to construct a new permanent terminal to replace the existing temporary terminal — Gateway’s No. 1 priority as passenger traffic is expected to grow by more than 50% over the next 10 to 15 years, according to a release.
“This is a big win for the East Valley’s economy. A new permanent terminal will make Gateway Airport even more attractive for investment and opportunity, and support expanded travel and job opportunities for residents,” Rep. Greg Stanton said in a release.
“We’re proud our infrastructure law makes these historic investments strengthening safety and modernizing Arizona’s airports. Today’s investments for Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport will support terminal upgrades and expansion for a permanent five-gate ADA-compliant facility,” Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who toured the airport earlier this year and was briefed on the plans for the expansion project by airport executives, said in a separate release.
“Thanks to our bipartisan infrastructure law, this investment will support the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport’s efforts to improve safety and boost capacity at a time of growing demand for air travel in our state and across the country,” Sen. Mark Kelly said in the release.
Gateway has used a portable 10,000-square-foot temporary passenger terminal annex with four gates, meant to accommodate passengers until a permanent structure could be constructed.
