11 indicted for stealing $440K in Nike shoes off Arizona train lines

Eleven people — most of whom were Mexican nationals — were indicted for a series of heists involving more than $440,000 worth of Nike shoes from trains transporting goods through California and Arizona.

The indictments, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, involve thefts along the BNSF line that runs through northern Arizona by groups of Mexican citizens who cut air hoses to control where trains can stop.

The indictment involves Noe Cecena-Castro and 10 others not named in a press release, with all 11 supsects in custody. Officials say on Jan. 13, Cecena-Castro and the others worked together to pack and transport roughly 1,900 pairs of Nike shoes off a train that was stopped with a cut air hose in Perrin, Arizona, according to a press release.

While it was stopped, a BNSF officer noticed shoe boxes on the side of the track. Law enforcement later found a box truck and a van near the site and they were searched, finding 1,985 pairs of unreleased Nike shoes.

Nine of the 11 defendants are Mexican nationals without legal status in the United States. In addition to the charge of possessing stolen goods, the grand jury also returned charges for three of the defendants of re-entry of removed alien and six of the defendants of improper entry by alien, according to the press release.

An indictment is merely an allegation of criminal conduct, not evidence. An individual is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The defendants will be arraigned on the charges in the Indictment on Feb. 19, according to the press release.

Homeland Security Investigations Flagstaff is handling the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Parker Stanley, District of Arizona, Flagstaff, is handling the prosecution. The United States Attorney’s Office continues to extend special gratitude to the Police Team at BNSF, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Flagstaff Police Department, Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, and Navajo County Sherriff’s Office for their valuable assistance in this matter.
