Scottsdale teen wins DAR national award for work with veterans

The Arizona State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has selected Evan Kobley of Scottsdale for one of its highest awards, for his outstanding work in helping veterans.

State Regent Morgan Elliott presented the DAR Service for Veterans Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award May 14 during the Arizona DAR’s 120th state conference.

The DAR Service for Veterans medal is awarded first at the chapter level. Winners go on to compete at the state, division and national levels. It was also announced that Evan was selected for the national level award, which will be presented to him July 2 by the National Society DAR President General Denise Doring VanBuren during the 131st Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.

Evan was nominated by the Four Peaks Chapter of Fountain Hills.

Evan’s service includes more than 670 volunteer hours to a variety of veteran organizations over the past five years. Among his many projects, Evan published three veteran’s stories for the Veterans Heritage Project, helped raise funds for Honor Flight of Arizona and was a guardian on a flight, was elected President of the Arizona Society Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) and served from 2020 to 2021. His C.A.R. state project was to raise funds and work with local professional orchestras to live stream concerts to veterans or to allow them to attend in person as the pandemic allowed. Evan is a junior at Notre Dame Preparatory High School and is a D1 ice hockey assistant captain.

“As we approach our nation’s 250 anniversary, our future looks extremely bright with outstanding youth like Evan working so diligently to support our veterans,” stated Arizona DAR State Regent Morgan Elliott.

Arizona DAR members are organized into 41 chapters throughout Arizona with each chapter performing service projects according to their own communities’ needs. Service projects may include writing cards and sending packages to military troops deployed overseas, helping local veterans, awarding medals to outstanding citizens and ROTC cadets, promoting literacy, planting pollinator gardens to promote conservation efforts and more. A recent donation made by the Daughters of Arizona DAR will support the Indian Youth of America summer camp in Prescott.
