Papago Plaza alters mixed-use footprint to include 4-lot subdivision

Posted

A four-lot subdivision has been approved for a 10-acre site to accompany the mixed-use development for Papago Plaza in south Scottsdale.

On March 3, Scottsdale City Council approved on consent a request to approve a zoning district map amendment and development agreement.

The intent of the application is to create new lots that will allow portions of the project to be sold to other entities, a city staff report states.

The parcel identified for the new subdivision is on the southwest corner of the Papago Plaza property at the southwest corner of Scottsdale and McDowell Road.

This request does not change the original development plan other than the creation of lots; necessary infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the project intensity are underway; and no opposition was noted for this subdivision, city officials say.

On Jan. 22, the Planning Commission recommended approval 7-0.

Papago Plaza has replaced the iconic, Pueblo-style Papago Plaza retail center, originally built in 1962. Developers broke ground on the project last December.

Slated for completion in fall 2020, the project serves as a catalyst for the redevelopment of the South Scottsdale Corridor, representing Scottsdale’s new urban gateway and a significant boost to the area’s revitalization and economy.

Upon completion, Papago Plaza will feature a community gathering place for entertainment, dining and retail including specialty restaurants and a grocer, Alliance Residential luxury apartment homes and a SpringHill Suites hotel designed in an orchard-like setting, according to a press release.
