One Civic Center Pocket Park Project to get $150K

Scottsdale City Council has authorized the transfer of $150,000 from the Downtown Cultural Trust for the newly-created One Civic Center Pocket Park Project.

Voted on consent at the regular March 17 meeting, funds will be transferred to the fiscal year 2019-20 General Fund Capital Contingency Budget, according to a city staff report.

The Downtown Cultural Trust is a subset of the Cultural Improvement Program, which applies to private development projects in zoning districts requiring a contribution.

The Trust is noted to receive contributions generated by the “valuation of private development projects in the downtown area,” that elect not to commission and install original artwork in its projects.

These funds, according to the report, are strictly used for the cost of artwork on property in the downtown area.

Meanwhile, city staff and Scottsdale Arts are working to select an artist team to design and construct the new pocket park at One Civic Center, the report said.

Following council’s approval to create the new CIP project, Capital Project Management and Scottsdale Arts will move ahead to complete the artist selection, the design and eventually install the pocket park site featuring art and encouraging more pedestrian walking.

As a result of the City of Scottsdale commissioning the Downtown 2.0 planning process, a master plan was developed by national and local consultants to provide a vision for downtown Scottsdale, which considered the importance of “pedestrian walkability” in its future for the plan, the report said.

One Civic Center was identified as a prime location for a pocket park that is noted to not only help enrich the pedestrian experience but enhance the urban environment.

One Civic Center Pocket Art Park will serve as a gateway into the Civic Center Mall offering high visibility and accessibility, the report added.
