Shaler: Voters should provide proof of citizenship

Posted

People registering to vote who do not provide adequate proof of citizenship are allowed to vote a “Federal Only” ballot. So, what prevents all of these recent immigrants from voting for president and U.S. Congress in November?

A.R.S.16-143 requires a procedure to verify that non-citizens do not vote in our elections: “The attorney general shall use all available resources to verify the citizenship status of the applicant and at a minimum shall compare the information available on the application for registration with the following: non-citizens from voting in our elections - “

The attorney general is then required to prosecute those whose citizenship the office is unable to confirm.

We must confirm that our Secretary of State and attorney general strictly comply with this Statute up to the date when Voter Registration ends.
