The Expanded Third Annual Scottsdale Dia de los Muertos Festival will celebrate the ancient tradition of Dia de Los Muertos, known as “Day of The Dead.”

The free, full-day event filled with fine-art installations, live dance and music performances, face painting, crafts, food and fun for the entire family is 9 a.m.-10:30 p.m., Saturday Nov. 2 at Old Adobe Mission, 3817 N. Brown Ave, at 1st Street in downtown Scottsdale, according to a press release.

“As Scottsdale Diade Los Muertos enters its third year, we are excited to welcome local communities and out of state visitors of all cultural backgrounds to learn about and partake in this festive ancient and historical tradition which reinforces familial bonds,” RobertRamirez, LORE Media&Arts spokesman said in a prepared statement.

The largest Scottsdale Dia de los Muertos festival to date reportedly unites world-class visual and performing artists, educators and the community to create an entertaining, cross cultural experience.

Both Brown and 1st streets will be closed for the event, the release said, encouraging attendees to wear Day of the Dead (Calaca)makeup and/or attire for the festivities.

Scottsdale dia de Los Muertos features fine art sculptures, installations, altars, mural paintings, family activities, music, storytelling, live painting, dance, food and community altars designed by local families, OLPH Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church members and the Scottsdale Boys and Girls Club, the release said.

The festival, hosted by LORE Media & Arts and the City of Scottsdale, will have a new collection of mural art panels painted by top-tier artists from the newly-expanded Arizona Collective, co-curated by Lucretia Torva.

Panels will pay homage to the Aztec Deity of Death, Mictlantechutli, and the Mesoamerican spiritual symbol of the hummingbird, detailed the release.

There will be new additions to LORE’s large scale sculptured Grand Skull collection, painted by renowned muralist LaloCota and the father-and-son team Such and Champ Styles.

The world renowned Grandeza Mexicana troupe will perform Folklorico dance plus live Mariachis and traditional Aztec dancers; musical ensemble Eternal Mercy will perform.

Educator and theatre artist Olivia Treviño will give historical lectures and theatrical performances of Aztec myths accompanied by the Mesoamerican instrumentation of Juan Carlos Morales, the release said.

The event will culminate in a community procession led by local art leaders and performance of traditional Mexican Chileno and Aztec dancing.
