‘An Intimate Look In’ debuts March 2 at Royse Contemporary

Royse Contemporary will present “An Intimate Look In,” a two-person exhibition showcasing the latest works of photorealistic oil painter Cam DeCaussin and the portrait photography of Marilyn Szabo.

This exhibition presents masterful artworks, reflecting upon the influences of Arizona, the desert, its people, and the prevalence of midcentury architecture in the Valley, according to a press release. When creating their work each artist is described as using strong imagery, an engaging style, and a compelling original voice, with the ability to capture “pure beauty and essence of their subject.”

DeCaussin is a skilled oil painter with an eye for detail and an ability to capture the energy and mystery within his subjects. His artwork is said to have a feel of voyeurism, but personal and relatable. His paintings feature some of Phoenix’s distinct midcentury homes, with people coming or going in the liminal space between.

Inspired and influenced by the work of painter Edward Hopper and photographer Gregory Crewdson, DeCaussin was formally trained in the arts receiving his Bachelors of Fine Art in illustration from Grand Valley State University and Masters of Fine Art in painting and drawing from Arizona State University.

His work has been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout the country, the release added.

Szabo is described as a creative force in Arizona culture having worked for over 25 years as a photographer. Her photography captures various people locally and abroad, evoking a sense of nostalgia and truth. Each piece is technically crafted, emotive, etc. She received her Bachelors in History from Virginia Commonwealth University with a minor in photography, the release noted.

As artist, curator and historian Szabo published book At Work in Arizona: the First 100, funded by Alliance Bank of Arizona featuring 168 pages including 80 of Szabo’s photographs, culminating a 15-year endeavor. Her work has garnered prestigious awards and grants, and can be found in public and private collections plus exhibited nationally and internationally.

The “An Intimate Look In” will open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, March 2, coinciding with the Scottsdale ArtWalk, with a special reception celebrating the artists. The exhibition will be on display at Royse Contemporary through April 2, the release said.

Royse Contemporary is in the Scottsdale Arts District in the Marshall Square complex at 7077 E. Main Street, Suite 6, Scottsdale. Royse Contemporary is open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday/Friday, 6-9 p.m. Thursday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and/or by appointment.
