Queen Creek schools look back at 2024 milestones

With 2024 winding down, the Queen Creek Unified School District is looking back at highlights from the first half of the school year.

From elementary to high school, districts students had plenty to be proud about:

Desert Mountain Elementary School

Music teacher Jenna Moulton directed the production “Press Start” featuring 50 students. They performed for the entire school and hosted an evening performance for parents.

The Lead Out Loud Club and the student council led a community service project at Feed My Starving Children.

Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary

Students, staff, family members and the PTO raised $75,000 through a Color Run fundraiser. All proceeds will support students and staff.

Third grade students attended the Project Exploration field trip, visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Colossal Cave in Tucson.

Frances Brandon-Pickett Elementary

Students Charlee A. and Marin M. were honored with the Power of One award at November’s governing board meeting.

Sixth-grade students achieved the highest district passing percentage in ELA and math on the benchmark assessment.

Gateway Polytechnic Academy

Nine students joined the Eastmark High School marching band for its final home game.

Special education teacher Molly Davis received a $1,000 classroom grant from the Queen Creek Education Foundation.

Jack Barnes Elementary

Reading specialist Julia Hastings hosted a "Lights, Camera, Read” family reading night.

Fifth and sixth graders designed and created holiday parade floats inspired by the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary

The Lighthouse Team and student council collected enough food to feed 81 families for Thanksgiving.

Kelly Ruth received a $1,000 grant from Queen Creek Education Foundation to provide decodable books for reading instruction.

Queen Creek Elementary

Third-grade students attended their Project Exploration trip.

Tammy Dolence received a Queen Creek Education Foundation grant for her classroom.

Schnepf Elementary

Won the QCUSD Running Club championship for the fourth consecutive year.

The PTO’s Giving Tree Initiative successfully supported local foster children.

Silver Valley Elementary

Celebrated Habit No. 3: Put First Things First during the third Habit Hollar assembly.

Reached all 50 states and two countries with the Fun Run fundraiser. Proceeds will help fund shade structures.

Newell Barney College Prep

Held a leadership day where students participated in Queen Creek High School’s college and career center and reviewed concepts from the Leader in Me program.

Participated in the QC Hometown Christmas Parade.

Seventh and eighth graders attended science camp where they learned about nature, teamwork and classroom concepts.

Queen Creek Junior High School

Seventh and eighth graders attended science camp focusing on teamwork, learning and connecting with nature.

Crismon High School

Coach Ben Brandau was named Arizona Health and Physical Education’s High School Teacher of the Year.

Brayden Neal qualified for the AIA boys golf state championship.

Eastmark High School

John Davis was a top 10 finalist for the United States Senate Youth Program.

Junior high social studies teacher Allie Skafi received the Husband and Wife Law Team Teacher of the Month Award and a grant for her classroom.

Eastmark Thespians earned an “Excellent” rating at the AIA One Act Festival.

Queen Creek High School

Coach Travis Schureman received multiple accolades, including Arizona Cardinals Coach of the Week (twice), Region Coach of the Year and the Earl Putnam Coach of the Year Award from the National Football Foundation.

QCHS Theater Co. was the first Arizona high school to perform “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

The QCHS cheer team placed first at the USA regionals cheer competition.

The QCHS marching band performed the national anthem at the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championships.

Queen Creek Unified School District

Celebrated 11 of 13 eligible schools receiving an “A” rating from the Arizona Department of Education.

Each school honored veterans with assemblies, parades or breakfasts organized by students and staff.

Queen Creek Education Foundation awarded grants to teachers, supporting supplemental resources for students.
