A supermarket and a restaurant in Queen Creek are asking the state for liquor licenses.
Recently, the Queen Creek Town Council approved sending recommendations to the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control for a Safeway and the restaurant Your Pie Pizza.
The Safeway currently under construction at 22983 E. Riggs Road is seeking a Series 9 liquor store license, while Your Pie Pizza at 24950 S. 206th St. in Pecan Lake Entertainment is requesting a Series 12 restaurant liquor license.
The council approved the recommendations in a 6-0 vote. Mayor Julia Wheatley is on a leave of absence until late fall.
The recommendations were part of the council’s public consent agenda in which all items are voted on with one motion and vote following a public hearing.
According to the application for Safeway, the store is expected to be completed by Jan. 7, 2026. The Series 9 license is a “quota” license available only through the Liquor License Lottery or for purchase on the open market.
“Once issued, this liquor license is transferable from person to person and/or location to location within the same county and allows a spirituous liquor store retailer to sell all types of spirituous liquors, only in the original unbroken package,” according to a staff report.
The Queen Creek Police Department found no cause to prevent or disqualify Safeway from moving forward with licensing.
Your Pie Pizza, owned by Pecan Lake Entertainment, is requesting a new Series 12 “non-transferable, on-sale retail privileges liquor license (that) allows the holder … to sell and serve all types of spirituous liquor solely for consumption on the premises of an establishment,” the report stated.
The holder of a Series 12 license must derive at least 40% of its gross revenue from the sale of food.
“Failure to meet the 40% food requirement may result in revocation of the license,” the report continued.
A report from QCPD is pending.
