A person detained Wednesday for carrying a pellet gun near an elementary school did not pose a threat to the community or school, the Queen Creek Police Department has determined.
Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary School was placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after police received a report of a person with a firearm.
Police responded to the area of Oriole Way and 225th Street near the school and "quickly detained one person, and the school was placed on lockdown as a precaution," according to QCPD.
A preliminary investigation found that the person detained was carrying a pellet gun and no injuries were reported.
"The investigation determined that the individual had not committed any crimes directly related to the school. However, it was found that the individual was using a pellet gun to shoot birds. Arizona Game & Fish was notified and took disposition of that portion of the investigation," QCPD stated in a Facebook post. "We want to reassure you that there is no known threat or danger to the school or community."
