Thanks to voters passing the Queen Creek Unified School District’s budget override last year, Eastmark High School in Mesa was able to launch a National Naval Defense Cadet Corps program.
This program, led by Jeff King, has allowed students to develop leadership and life skills. The corps values community service and giving back to the community that supports it, according to a district press release.
Eighth-grader Corbyn C. joined the corps because she had personal ties.
“My brother actually participated in Queen Creek High School, and it looked very interesting to me. I wanted to try as well,” she stated in the release.
She added that joining the program has helped her develop valuable skills.
“I have learned leadership skills. It’s more about communicating with other people and letting them know that their opinion matters. We connect and put our ideas together,” Corbyn stated.
Drill team leader Raiden P. described that much of what the corps does centers on community service.
“For service projects, we took our color guard and our officers down to Gate Park this recent Veterans Day to honor the veterans of our nation,” he stated in the release. “We helped set up. We did flag folding there, too, and throughout the community, we’ve done many things like trash cleanups and other projects like that.”
Raiden P., reflected on how the program helps students grow into well-rounded community members.
“I think people should join ROTC because it helps you become a better U.S. citizen. It teaches you leadership values,” Raiden stated.
As Corbyn C. reflected on her experience at Eastmark High School, she shared how the campus offers countless opportunities to get involved.
“A student should come to Eastmark because it is a great school. There are a bunch of programs and clubs to join, and it opens up a wide variety of things for you to do,” she stated in the release.
