Queen Creek drivers are starting to feel the effects as Mesa begins the first phase of a road-widening project.
On Monday, crews began work on the northbound lanes of Ellsworth Road from Germann to Willis/Pecos roads as part of the more than one-year Mesa project.
To accommodate the work, northbound Ellsworth Road has been reduced to one lane from south of Germann Road to Willis/Pecos Road.
The northbound lane restiction will be in place 24 hours a day. Southbound lanes are not affected during Phase 1.
The project will eventually add three lanes in each direction on Ellsworth Road between Ray and Germann roads, according to the city of Mesa website.
Along with widening the road, the project also includes traffic signal upgrades, landscaping, signs and roadway striping.
The overall Ellsworth Road widening project will take place in three phases:
Phase 1: Construction of Ellsworth Road northbound lanes
Phase 2: Construction of Ellsworth Road southbound lanes
Phase 3: Construction of center median modifications
As work is completed, crews will move northbound to the next segments. The entire Ellsworth Road project is expected to be completed in February 2027.
The Queen Creek Police Department is ecouraging drivers to use alternative routes to access State Route 24 such as Signal Butte Road, Meridian Road and Ironwood Drive during the widening project.
