A new U-Haul storage facility at the southeast corner of Ocotillo and Crismon roads is getting closer to its grand opening.
But first, the business needed to get approval for its planned signs on the building.
The three-story, 122,340-square-foot facility is on 5.4 acres. Along with the climate-controlled facility, the U-Haul has an additional 5,000 square feet of single-story drive-up storage buildings.
On Wednesday, the Queen Creek Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the business’ comprehensive sign plan that includes lighted signs mounted on the 45-foot-tall building.
“The main reason we want to do this is we want to keep with the branding that U-Haul provides their locations,” applicant Steve Sky of Christy Signs told the commission. “They have (many) more signs than this and they want to at least keep some (signs that are) in keeping with what they normally have and what is required by the city.”
The business is to the north of the Crismon Heights neighborhood, an RV and boat storage to the east and vacant land to the west that has been zoned for industrial.
U-Haul received approval for two 45-square-foot illuminated cabinet signs and three non-illuminated letter signs.
“According to the applicant, the sign illumination will be reduced to 50% brightness during evening hours to minimize impact on nearby residents and turned off by 10 p.m. or earlier when the facility is not operational,” according to a staff report.
The U-Haul building will also have interior storage corridors that are visible through second- and third-story windows that will be lit throughout the day and evening.
The business will be dimming the corridor lighting to 20% brightness during non-operational hours and completely turned off during late hours “unless safety requirements necessitate otherwise,” the report stated.
In January 2023, the Queen Creek Town Council approved the site plan for the U-Haul facility.
While there are smaller U-Haul locations in Queen Creek called U-Haul neighborhood dealers, there are only two other large U-Haul locations. They are at 6028 W. Hunt Highway and 7125 S. Power Road.
