Leader of Tomorrow: Christabel Emenim is the Queen Creek Hometown Hero for June

Posted

At just 16, Christabel Emenim is already involved in serving her community more than most adults.

The Queen Creek High School student is balancing classes, community involvement and family.

At her school, Emenim helps new freshmen navigate campus life, she is the treasurer for her school club, runs track and is a member of her principal’s Teen Advisory Board.

Outside of school, she is vice president of the Mayor’s Teen Advisory Committee, and a member of the Citizens Advisory Council that’s helping to guide the town’s update of its general plan.

And then there is the rest of her volunteer work with Feed My Starving Children, advocating for teen mental health, creating cards for the elderly and helping out with school dances and club fundraisers.

“I love that no matter which club I participate in, I am always helping someone in the community,” Emenim said.

Name: Christabel Emenim

Age: 16

Town/neighborhood: Hastings Farms Queen Creek

When and why I moved here: I moved to Queen Creek in 2022. My dad got an opportunity to help develop the next generation semiconductors for Intel. He jumped at the opportunity and moved the whole family to Arizona all the way from Colorado.

What I like most about living here: I was born and raised in Colorado. I was reluctant to move down to Arizona because I had already established myself in school and my community. Since moving here, I have discovered more opportunities to be part of the development in the town and have gotten to know really interesting people. I love the community Queen Creek has. People are very friendly and neighborly. From my experience, it is very easy to find something or someone you can relate to here. Queen Creek has very high spirits that always make people feel welcome.

What I do: I am an A+ student at Queen Creek High School. I participate in various clubs and leadership positions. As a member of Link Crew, I help new freshmen get involved in our campus. I am the Key Club treasurer. I assist with budgeting for the club. I participate in track, and I am a member of my principal's Teen Advisory Board. Outside of school, I am the vice president of the Mayor’s Teen Advisory Committee, and a member of the Citizens Advisory Council to assist with Queen Creek’s general plan.

Personal background highlights: I am of Nigerian heritage. Family values are very strong and important to us. I am the oldest of three girls. I am very involved in taking care of my younger siblings who are 7 and 5 years old, while I maintain exceptional grades in school.

Community background highlights: Some volunteer work that I have participated in includes Feed My Starving Children, creating and hosting events for Queen Creek teens, creating tutoring opportunities, advocating for teen mental health, helping with special needs and creating cards for the elderly. At school, I enjoy helping out with school dances and club fundraisers.

What I like most about what I do: Most of the activities that I am involved in help different people within Queen Creek. I love that no matter which club I participate in, I am always helping someone in the community. Whether it be helping freshmen fit into campus, advocating for teens in the community, or volunteering to raise money, I love every aspect because they follow my morals and support my fellow peers.

What does being nominated for this category mean to you? Being nominated has given me a sense of pride and conviction. It validates all the effort I have put in all these years. It feels good to be recognized for all the hard work and to know that people notice my participation in the community. My one goal is to make sure that I make a difference in my community. This nomination shows me that my participation is positively impactful and is being noticed.

What does it mean to be a Queen Creek resident? I am proud to be a resident of Queen Creek. I love being a part of a community that actually comes together to make people feel welcome and actively create projects that help everyone no matter their age. I know this because I have participated in the planning of various social activities which support the community.

What do you think you bring to the local community that makes it better? Service. My voice ensures that teens in Queen Creek get the opportunity to have a say in their community.

What would you tell people about why it's important to make a difference in Queen Creek? A lot of people are afraid of expressing themselves because they feel that their individual voices do not matter. I am a clear example that this is not the case. If you have a dream, work on it until you see results. Surround yourself with positive thinking people. If you believe you can achieve something, then you can.

Changes I'd like to see in this area: I would like to see more teen participation in Queen Creek town events.

Favorite community cause & why:
My favorite community cause is “Spring Into Queen Creek.” It really exemplifies the values of our town such as togetherness and family values. Going to this event with my family helps us continue to build oneness and we get to know the neighbors around.

My family: My family consists of myself, my dad, my mom, my grandma and two sisters, who are 7 and 5 years old. My dad is an entrepreneur, my mom is a family nurse practitioner.

My interests and hobbies: Track, reading, writing, watching shows, playing games.

The trait(s) I admire in others:  Articulation, empathy, insightfulness, kindness and confidence.

People who inspired me (and how): My dad and my mom have inspired me to pursue success through hard work and being compassionate to those around me.

My guiding philosophy: Success is not about being better than others, but a continued act of growth, staying disciplined, and perseverance, even when it gets hard.

My advice to today’s youth: If you find the slightest interest in something, set a goal and act towards it. You never know where it might take you. I know for sure that the experience is invaluable.
