Gulfstream Aerospace constructing service center at Mesa airport

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., with services including business jet aircraft manufacturing and maintenance, is constructing a new 225,000-square-foot maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa.

The new facility represents a $70 million investment by Gulfstream. The Mesa service center will offer a broad range of services and add additional capacity for customers in the western U.S., according to a release.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is operated by the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority. PMGAA consists of representation from Apache Junction, Mesa, Queen Creek, Gilbert, Gila River Indian Community and Phoenix.

“Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is an ideal location for Gulfstream’s newest MRO facility,” Derek Zimmerman, president of Gulfstream customer support, said in the release. “Not only is it an established airport for business aviation operators, its infrastructure and size provide a great location for both Gulfstream and our customers. The state of Arizona, the city of Mesa and the airport authority have been incredibly welcoming and supportive of our efforts to expand our service capabilities. In addition, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Arizona State University and local school districts have been involved with us since the beginning to offer certificate, degree and training programs that will translate directly to careers at Gulfstream. The new facility and the job creation that will follow is great news for our customers, our employees and the community,” he said.

“The arrival of Gulfstream is further proof that Gateway Airport is one of the best locations in North America for MRO and other aerospace facilities. The hundreds of high-wage jobs and educational partnerships that will be generated with this facility will have a profound impact on the entire region,” Mesa Mayor John Giles, chairman of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, said.

The facility at Gateway Airport will be Gulfstream’s first in Arizona and will feature a sustainable, modern design, in line with Gulfstream’s sustainability goals, the release states.

“Gulfstream’s arrival represents the single largest private investment in the history of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport,” J. Brian O’Neill, PMGAA executive director and CEO, said in the release. “Gateway Airport has proven to be an ideal location for MRO facilities, and Gulfstream’s announcement further validates our position as a global industry leader.”

Gulfstream has also announced workforce development partnerships with Arizona State University and Chandler-Gilbert Community College, adjacent to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. These partnerships will prepare tomorrow’s workers and provide high-paying jobs in the fast-growing aerospace sector.

Gateway Airport is served by five commercial airlines offering nonstop service to more than 60 domestic and international destinations. The airport also has approximately 1,000 acres of aeronautical and non-aeronautical land available for development. SkyBridge Arizona is a 360-acre master development offering large parcels and airfield access. The GatewayEast master development includes 400 acres of mixed-use non-aeronautical development opportunities strategically located adjacent to two highway systems.
