Cooley, Cortina recognized with A+ distinction

Posted

Higley Unified School District's Cooley Middle School and Cortina Elementary School were selected as A+ Schools of Excellence by the Arizona Educational Foundation, a recognition awarded to public schools that show strong leadership, high-quality instruction and consistent academic performance.

The designation follows a review process that includes a written application, interviews and on-campus evaluations by AEF judges. Schools hold the title for four years and may participate in AEF mentoring and professional learning efforts during that time.

“It doesn’t only benefit those who are recognized,” AEF Chief Executive Officer Kim Graham said. “The application process itself is a useful self-assessment tool for schools. It provides a framework to analyze what they’re doing and how they can improve. AEF then facilitates learning and mentorship opportunities, so schools have tangible paths to progress.”

Cooley Principal Chad Cantrell said the recognition reflects the work of the school community.

“We are extremely proud to earn this recognition as the judges are educators from around the state of Arizona who have already earned the A+ School of Excellence designation and see Cooley for the exceptional school that it is,” Cantrell said.

Cortina Principal Kelly Papke said the school’s recognition highlights the contributions of students, staff and families.

“This special recognition was made possible through the collective efforts of our entire school community,” Papke said. “It truly reflects the dedication, teamwork, heart and commitment shown by our students, staff and parents.”

With Cooley and Cortina earning the A+ designation, Higley Unified now has four schools recognized by the Arizona Educational Foundation. All district campuses also hold an “A” rating from the Arizona State Board of Education.
