Chandler police shoot, kill assault suspect in Tempe

Posted

An unidentified man was shot and killed Friday night in Tempe as Chandler police officers attempted to arrest him as a suspect in an aggravated assault incident that occurred in their city.

Chandler detectives were in Tempe Friday with probable cause to arrest the suspect in the assault that occurred two weeks earlier, police said.

Just before 8 p.m. July 17, the suspect fled as officers attempted the arrest. The man ran into an apartment complex in the 800 block of McKellips Road, displayed a gun and was shot by police, according to a Chandler Police Department release.

Officers rendered medical aid, but firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene.

The suspect’s identification is pending next-of-kin notification, Chandler police said.

The incident is being investigated by the Mesa Police Department under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team protocol.
