Lamb controls lead on Keenan for CD5 Republican nomination
Arizona Secretary of State
Daniel Keenan, left, and Mark Lamb are seeking the Republican Party's nomination to the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizon Congressional Distrct 5.
Former Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb is bucking negative media accounts of his personal life and is out to a strong lead in the results released Wednesday evening for the Congressional District 5 House Republican nomination.
Lamb has 46,103 votes for 58.3% to Daniel Keenan's 32,975 votes, which is 41.7%.
The Republican nominee will advance to the Nov. 3 general election to face the winner of the Democratic primary, where Brian Hualde, Chris James and Elizabeth Lee are competing for their party's nomination.
Congressional District 5 includes Gilbert, Queen Creek, San Tan Valley and Sun Lakes, as well as the southern and eastern portions of Chandler and eastern Mesa in Maricopa and Pinal counties.
Arizona's election system allows early ballots to be processed before Election Day, meaning the first results released after polls close at 8 p.m. Tuesday typically include the bulk of early voting. Additional batches of early ballots and Election Day votes will be reported throughout the evening and in the days following as counties continue tabulating ballots.
Unofficial results will remain subject to change until the canvass is completed. The winner of the Republican primary will appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot to compete for the seat being vacated by Andy Biggs, who is running for governor.
