Phoenix’s new program offers second chance to renters with poor financial past

If you have an eviction record, poor credit or insufficient income, it can be hard to find someone who will rent you an apartment. The city of Phoenix is trying to change that.

Phoenix City Council on Wednesday approved $5 million for its new master leasing program, which allows the city to rent apartment units from landlords and sublease them to Phoenix residents — with more lenient requirements to get in the door and support services provided for renters.

“For me, this is about taking an idea that we’ve been talking about and turning it into something that will have a real impact on people’s lives,” said Vice Mayor Kesha Hodge Washington, who spearheaded the idea, during Wednesday’s city council meeting.
