Phoenix extends use of legal urban camping space

Phoenix City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved a zoning change that extends the special permit for the city’s Safe Outdoor Space to continue operating.

The 5.5-acre property at the southwest corner of 15th Avenue and Jackson Street opened in 2023 as a place where urban camping is allowed under a shade structure in tents provided by the city. It can hold up to 200 camp sites.

Vice Mayor Kesha Hodge Washington thanked the city’s Office of Homeless Solutions for their work at the safe outdoor space, particularly working with residents to improve the space.
