Man dies in hit-and-run collision in central Phoenix

A 57-year-old man was killed Wednesday evening in a hit-and-run collision in central Phoenix according to a news release from the Phoenix Police Department on Thursday.

According to the release, at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 8, Phoenix Police and Phoenix Fire responded to reports of a hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian near 5th Avenue and Indian School Road. Upon arrival, first responders located the man, later identified as DeWayne Lewis, in the roadway. Lewis was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Detectives from the Vehicular Crimes Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. Preliminary information indicates Lewis was crossing Indian School Road midblock, when he was struck by a white SUV traveling eastbound. The SUV did not stop and fled the scene prior to police arrival.
