Farmworkers Day: Phoenix permanently renames Cesar Chavez Day

The holiday formerly known as Cesar Chavez Day will now forever be known as Farmworkers Day in the city of Phoenix.

The change also moves the holiday from March 31 to April 6.

A news report detailing allegations that Chavez sexually abused women and girls was published on March 18. Phoenix City Council moved quickly to rename the approaching March 31, 2026, holiday to Farmworkers Day, but the vote applied to the 2026 holiday only, leaving the door open potentially for the holiday to be called something else in the future.
