Paul Purtzer, a former PGA tournament player and two-time Arizona Open Champion as well as Colorado Open Champion and Southwest PGA Champion, was sidelined as a professional golfer decades ago by injuries that seriously affected his ability to compete.
At one time Mr. Purtzer set course records from Phoenix to Calcutta, India, according to a press release.
An injury to his left wrist ended his PGA tour career, then later an injury to his ankle, and more recently issues with his neck have severely hampered his ability to play the kind of golf he wanted. Over the years, he managed his pain and movement limitations as well as he could with help from doctors and therapists.
Mr. Purtzer was referred by a golf professional at Paradise Valley Golf Club to a doctor at Barrow Neurological Institute. There, he discussed with the doctor the treatments and successful results he had heard about Andy Clary and his clinic FROGS Physical Therapy in Scottsdale.
Mr. Clary is a licensed physical therapist and certified athletic trainer who specializes in diagnosing and correcting the source of pain issues. The Barrows doctor encouraged Mr. Purtzer to see Mr. Clary, the press release states.
Mr. Purtzer praises the day he began working with Mr. Clary, who fixed Mr. Purtzer’s physical problems by conducting a bio-mechanical evaluation and prescribing the best therapy techniques to resolve his issues. Mr. Clary says, “Improper body alignment causes many pain and mobility complaints.”
The physical problems are sometimes improved with medications and surgery, but, in essence, a bio-mechanical evaluation can often pinpoint the problems and dictate the methods for significant improvement.
“It would be nice to see doctors prescribe this kind of evaluation when they are performing yearly physicals,” Mr. Clary said, noting that at FROGS PT, they “treat your problem, not just your symptoms.”
FROGS provides advanced Kinetic Chain Assessment to determine a client’s muscle firing patterns and identify imbalances. The process involves a detailed analysis of the client’s daily routine and current physical condition as well as a review of posture, gait and functional movement patterns, the press release stated.
As for Mr. Purtzer, he says “I never wanted to have surgery, and fortunately I began working with Andy Clary in early 2017. After only 6 sessions, I was able to start hitting balls without pain for the first time in 15 months.”
Today, Mr. Purtzer is a highly regarded golf instructor and was named one of the best instructors in Arizona by Golf Digest Magazine. He is currently Director of Instruction at Purtzer Golf Academy, Stonecreek Golf Club and President of Purtzer Golf Outings, conducting world class corporate and charitable golf events.
Purtzer Golf Academy is located at the Stonecreek Golf Club, 4435 E. Paradise Village Parkway South in Phoenix. FROGS PT and the BioFit Golf Performance Academy are located at 16580 N. 92nd St., suite 102 at the SOHO Scottsdale Community.
